Leave central Beijing in the early morning as the city is just waking up, heading north through the outskirts until the forested hills of Huairou come into view. Mutianyu Great Wall emerges above the treeline — one of the finest and least crowded sections of the Wall, where restored battlements and ancient watchtowers stretch dramatically across the ridgeline. With around 4 hours to explore freely, you can ride the cable car to the top, walk as far as you like along the ramparts, and stand somewhere truly extraordinary with nothing but mountains and open sky around you.
In the afternoon, the journey continues to the western edge of the city, where the Summer Palace has been drawing visitors for centuries — and for good reason. The Long Corridor winds along the northern shore of Kunming Lake, its beams painted with thousands of intricate scenes from Chinese history and legend. Beyond it, willow trees trail in the water, pavilions rise from rocky hillsides, and the whole place carries a sense of timeless calm that feels worlds away from the morning's adventure on the Wall. Three hours here is never quite enough.
