When comparing China tours from the UK, separate the route you want from the arrangements included in the price. International flights, room occupancy, transport within China and guiding can change both the cost and the experience. Entry eligibility is a further, separate question: living in the UK does not mean every traveller has the same passport conditions.
This guide combines booking advice with official information from the Chinese Embassy in the UK, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, the Civil Aviation Authority and China Railway. Start with the route, then compare what the price covers
Write down your must-see places and available travel dates. A route including Beijing and Shanghai does not necessarily include Xi’an, Chengdu or a cruise. Their published programmes, not a generic “China highlights” label, define the trip.
For each shortlisted tour, establish whether the quoted fare covers land arrangements only or international flights as well. Then compare the same room occupancy and departure period. A twin-share starting price and a solo traveller’s final price are different amounts.
What to check in a flight-inclusive quote
- UK airport: the departure airport and any additional connection you need to reach it.
- China airports: the arrival and return airports, which may be in different cities.
- Timetable: local dates, connection points and whether travel uses an overnight flight.
- Baggage: the allowance for the quoted fare on each flight, rather than a general airline headline.
- Transfers: whether the airport-to-hotel connections match those specific flights.
- Total: your chosen rooms, any required supplements and the payment terms.
Do not treat “flights available” as “flights included”. If an organiser will add flights later, ask for the complete written quote before comparing it with a package that already includes them.
British passport holders: the dated entry position
The Chinese Embassy’s notice provides visa-free entry for eligible UK ordinary passport holders for stays of up to 30 days for specified purposes including tourism, from 17 February through 31 December 2026. Travellers who do not meet its conditions need a visa before travel. Chinese Embassy: 2026 visa-waiver notice.
The FCDO identifies the relevant British passport nationality as “British citizen”. Its China entry guidance also states a passport-validity requirement of at least six months from arrival and two blank pages. For a 2027 departure, do not assume the policy ending in December 2026 will still apply. Recheck the official guidance before committing to arrangements and again before travel. If your nationality or documents differ, obtain the conditions relevant to you from the Chinese authorities. This mainland-China guidance should not be used as a substitute for checking Hong Kong or Macao requirements.
ATOL: check the protection for the actual booking
The Civil Aviation Authority explains that an ATOL Certificate identifies the protected purchase, the people covered and the issuer. For an ATOL-protected booking, check those details when you receive the certificate rather than relying on a logo alone. CAA: ATOL Certificates.
Ask which arrangements are covered by your specific booking. This article does not establish that a land-only itinerary or separately purchased service is ATOL protected. If flights or other services are booked separately, ask each provider to explain its arrangements rather than assuming the protection of one purchase extends to everything.
Read the China transport arrangements separately
For each journey between cities, identify the transport type, the booked service or class when specified, and the connections at both ends. A rail ticket and a station transfer are separate services. The same applies to a cruise fare and the journey to its embarkation point.
China Railway’s official 12306 website is a reference for checking rail services. Its English registration form requests passport information. Provide the correct details of the document you will use and follow the current booking instructions; do not copy a name or document number from an expired passport. 12306 registration requirements.
Our planning advice is to compare the whole transfer, from hotel departure to arrival at the next accommodation. An advertised train journey time alone does not tell you how much of that day remains free.
Compare group size, guiding and rooming
Ask for the actual maximum group size if “small group” is part of your decision. Clarify whether the itinerary uses local guides in different cities, an escort throughout, or assistance only during selected activities. Ask when you will be exploring independently.
For accommodation, record the number of nights, room type and occupancy basis. If a cruise is included, identify the cabin as well as the hotel rooms. Families should ask about the room combinations available for their party; solo travellers should compare the single-occupancy total.

A practical way to compare two quotations

Add required extras to each quoted price using the same currency and party size. Keep personal spending and optional upgrades separate. Do not count an excursion twice if it is already included in one offer.
What to send us for a useful recommendation
Send your preferred UK airport, date flexibility, number of travellers, room requirements, must-see places and approximate total budget. Say whether flights need to fit inside that budget. Share any access or dietary requirements early so feasibility can be checked for the proposed itinerary.
